Even in the summer semester, the internal VCM workshops are back! This time: “Ideas and Team Finding” with Friedrich Grimm.

After a short break, an internal workshop on entrepreneurship finally took place again at VCM. On Monday, July 3, some VCM members were able to learn everything essential about getting started with a startup in just one hour at REACH. The topics covered included idea generation, idea validation, and team building, led by workshop facilitator Friedrich Grimm.

Friedrich started with an introduction to idea generation. He explained that problems should always be viewed subjectively. Needs should be met by the right target audience with a solution tailored to that audience. Friedrich also revealed why most startups fail and recommended that everyone train their “idea muscle” daily in order to come up with good ideas.

Next came the topic of “idea validation.” Friedrich briefly touched on the Build-Measure-Learn Cycle and emphasized again that customer‑focused surveys (e.g., using an evaluation) positively contribute to refining ideas. Validation is also essential for finding a niche where the solution fits the problem.

After participants learned some basics about “ideas,” the workshop moved on to “team building.” Besides the idea, the team is a central factor for a potential startup’s success. Friedrich explained the ideal founding team using a “founder triangle,” which presented different personas and their traits. It’s important to know that a founding team should be as diverse as possible in terms of skills and character.

At the end of the workshop, participants got to try it themselves by presenting their own ideas in a hands‑on exercise. This gave them the chance to apply what they’d learned. After each presentation, Friedrich offered extra tips on idea generation, such as never saying in the future, “I have an idea, but I think it already exists,” and reminding them that, besides apps, tangible products can also be considered when looking for a solution.

We thank Friedrich for the fantastic workshop and everyone involved for actively participating!
