Pitch Workshop Recap

Workshop “Pitch Perfect” with Andreas Luthe

On Wednesday, December 7, a VCM workshop once again attracted several members to REACH. Titled “Pitch Perfect,” Andreas Luthe gave an interactive talk on pitching and creating a pitch.

First, Andreas had us fill out the 9‑field matrix that maps the most important elements of a pitch. It ultimately consists of nine key words that are meant to help you build and craft your pitch:

  1. Problem: It is essential to pinpoint the problem that the idea tackles, as well as the issues that existing solutions bring with them. Working with so‑called “storytelling” is very helpful here, which Andreas illustrated with two vivid examples, making the pitch both compelling and understandable for the audience.
  2. Solution: Here you should briefly and concisely describe how the presented problem will be solved.
  3. Unique Selling Proposition (USP): With this point you should demonstrate the uniqueness of the product, in whatever form that may take.
  4. Business Model: Describing the business model shows how and with whom you intend to make money.
  5. Market: Typically, this involves presenting the TAM (total addressable market), SAM (served available market) and SOM (share of market), along with a general market overview.
  6. Competition: What does the competition look like, and how do you differentiate yourself from it?
  7. Milestones/ Traction: In this section, all key events for the company to date should be listed, whether financing rounds or first revenues.
  8. Team: The team can stand out through diverse qualifications. Motivation and passion should also be emphasized here. A standout team is a strong indicator of success — also for potential investors.
  9. Deal/ Call to Action: It’s also crucial to clearly convey to the audience what you’re looking for (e.g., funding or a network).

Keep in mind, however, that this matrix is a very flexible model and a pitch is always situation‑dependent. It’s often wise to heavily trim or even omit some of the elements listed above.

Afterwards, Andreas gave us a few tips on presentation layout to help keep the audience more engaged. The workshop wrapped up with additional tips and tricks for body language and presentation style, and an appeal that a pitch becomes truly successful mainly through practice and preparation.

Thank you for a great workshop!
